Know what's coming in and going out

You can't manage what you can't see. You don't need accounting software on day one — you need a simple, honest record of money in and money out. Ten minutes a week beats a shoebox of receipts and a panic every tax season.

Do this

  1. Pick one place to record it: a free app, a spreadsheet, or a notebook — whatever you'll actually use.
  2. Each week, log what came in and what went out: date, who, how much, what for.
  3. Snap a photo of every receipt the moment you get it. Future-you will be grateful.
  4. Once a month, total it up and actually look. That five-minute look is where the insights live.

The simplest money tracker that works

Five columns. That's the whole system:

DATE WHO / WHAT IN OUT CATEGORY ------ ----------------- ------ ------ ---------- 06/03 Miller oil change $95 income 06/03 Auto parts store $42 supplies 06/04 Gas $38 fuel

At month end, add up IN, add up OUT, and subtract. That difference is the first honest look at whether the month made money. Keep it boring and keep it current — a tracker you update beats a perfect one you don't.
