SpaceX and the State of Louisiana announced a $100 billion spaceport at Pecan Island on 25 August 2026. This is what is actually announced, what a build like it buys, and what a Louisiana business can usefully do about it now.

The project is sited in one parish and its supplier base is the whole state, which is why it lives here rather than under Vermilion.
What is actually announced
A short list, because it is a short list.
- Announcement. 25 August 2026, SpaceX with the State of Louisiana.
- Site. About 125,000 acres at Pecan Island, Vermilion Parish.
- Construction. Expected to begin in 2027.
- First launch. Targeted as soon as 2029.
- End state. Five launch complexes, two pads each, so ten pads.
- Also planned. Propellant farms and propellant production, power generation, vehicle processing, residential housing, deep water shipping, an airport.
- Jobs. 3,000 direct over ten years, 8,100 indirect estimated.
- Reviews. Louisiana DEQ, the FAA and the Army Corps of Engineers.
- Built so far. Nothing.
Note what is missing: no phase plan, no package breakdown, no named prime contractor, no supplier portal. That is normal this early, and it is why anything beyond the list above is an estimate rather than a schedule.
Two things said around the announcement are worth keeping apart from it. Elon Musk has separately spoken of more than a dozen towers, which is ambition rather than a documented plan. And reporting puts the permitting with the three agencies above, with dockets expected to open in 2027, and describes the federal wetlands permits as covering an area of more than 200 square miles.

The honest read
The useful thing for a Louisiana business is not the $100 billion. It is the 8,100 indirect roles, and the fact that qualification happens before procurement. The firms that win work in the second decade of a project like this are mostly the ones who were already known in the first.
