Find buyers in other countries

You don't have to fly around the world to find overseas buyers — the U.S. government runs a whole service whose job is to connect American small businesses with vetted foreign buyers. Between that, trade events, and smart online research, finding your first international customer is more doable than it sounds. The trick is to go where buyers are already looking for suppliers like you.

Do this

  1. Research the best markets first: where's the demand for your product, and where's it easiest to do business?
  2. Use the U.S. Commercial Service — they'll do buyer matchmaking and market research for small exporters.
  3. Explore trade missions and virtual trade shows (some funded by STEP grants) to meet buyers without huge travel cost.
  4. Vet buyers carefully and start with a manageable first order — prove the relationship before you scale it.

Where overseas buyers come from

You have more help finding buyers than you'd think — most of it free or grant-funded:

U.S. COMMERCIAL SERVICE (trade.gov) Trade specialists who match U.S. small businesses to vetted foreign buyers, run market research, and even set up meetings abroad. TRADE EVENTS & MISSIONS In-person and virtual trade shows; STEP grants can help cover the cost. ONLINE B2B marketplaces and targeted outreach in your target market's language.

THEN, PROTECT YOURSELF: • Vet the buyer (the Commercial Service can help check them out) • Start with a manageable first order • Get paid safely — that's the next lesson, and it's the one that matters most.
