Document company values and expectations (a culture doc or handbook)
Culture is what your team does when you're not watching — and it makes or breaks a growing business. Defining your values and expectations on purpose builds a team that delivers your standard consistently.
Do this
- Name the handful of values that define how you work.
- Translate each into concrete expected behaviors.
- Hire, recognize, and correct against those values.
- Live them yourself — culture follows the founder's example.
Define Your Culture
1. Name 3-5 core values (how you work, not slogans): e.g. "Do what we say", "Leave it better than we found it"
2. Make each concrete — what does it look like in action? "Do what we say" → we call back same day, we hit our quoted dates
3. Use them everywhere: • Hire for them • Recognize people who live them • Address behavior that violates them
Culture is built by what you reward and tolerate — starting with your own example.
