Get your Louisiana and federal tax IDs

Once you're registered, you need two tax IDs: a federal EIN from the IRS and a Louisiana tax account with the Department of Revenue. These let you hire, file taxes, and collect sales tax legally.

Do this

1. Get your federal EIN free at irs.gov (takes about 10 minutes).
2. Register a Louisiana tax account on LaTAP (the state's tax portal).
3. Sign up for the specific taxes you'll owe — sales tax, and withholding tax if you'll have employees.
4. Record your logins and account numbers somewhere safe.
