Turn 'not right now' into a future yes
Most 'no's are really 'not yet.' The timing's off, money's tight, or it just isn't urgent — today. If you stay in touch, helpfully and without pressure, you become the person they call the moment it does get urgent. The long game quietly wins more business than any hard close.
Do this
- When it's 'not now,' ask permission to check back — and roughly when.
- Log it in your pipeline with a real date so it never quietly disappears.
- Stay on their radar with the occasional helpful, no-strings touch.
- When the timing turns, you're already the trusted option — no cold start, no competing.
The gracious 'not now' close
Don't push a no into a yes. Turn it into a date:
"Totally understand — now's not the time. Mind if I check back in the spring when things settle? I'll make a note."
Then actually make the note (pipeline, next-step date, done). When spring comes:
"Hey — you mentioned circling back around now. Still on your list?"
You're not starting over. You're the one who remembered, showed up on time, and didn't hassle them. That's usually the one who gets the job.
