Pick where your business will operate
Where you operate shapes your costs, your rules, and how customers reach you. Whether it's your home, a truck, or a storefront, the move is to pick the location that fits the business — and check the local rules before you sign anything or spend a dime.
Do this
- Match the setup to your business: home-based, mobile, a shared space, or a storefront.
- Check local zoning and any home-occupation rules for what you plan to do there.
- Weigh the real costs: rent, utilities, permits — and whether customers need to come to you.
- Remember location is marketing too: be where your customers already are, or can easily reach.
Home vs. commercial — a quick gut-check
Most small businesses start at home or on the road. Go bigger only when the work demands it.
HOME / MOBILE — cheapest, fastest, fewest rules. Check: • Does home-occupation zoning allow it? • Do customers need to visit you (or do you go to them)? • Any HOA or lease limits on running a business?
COMMERCIAL SPACE — needed when you have walk-in customers, staff, or equipment/inventory that won't fit at home. Check: • Zoning allows your kind of business • Total cost (rent + utilities + build-out + permits), not just rent • Foot traffic and parking, if customers come to you
Start lean. You can always move up once the demand is real.
