How to delegate their shifts to the remaining team without causing a mutiny

The team is already nervous after a departure. How you reassign the work in the first 48 hours sets the tone — name it, share the load, and make it temporary on purpose.

Do this

  1. Tell the team in person, same day. Don't let them hear it second-hand.
  2. Reassign the open shifts in writing, with names and dates, by the next morning.
  3. Add a temporary stipend or comp time for whoever picks up extra hours — even a small one signals you noticed.
  4. Put a 30-day end date on the temporary plan so it doesn't become the new normal.
