Pecan Island rules, sales tax and state fees

The reference page. Which authority governs what, the exact sales tax rate for unincorporated Vermilion Parish, every Secretary of State fee that applies, and what changes on 1 October 2026.

Checked 26 August 2026

Everything on this page carries the date it was checked. Fees and rates change, and a stale number here would be worse than no page at all, so treat the date stamp as part of the fact.

If you are about to file something or charge a customer, confirm with the office named beside the number.

Who governs what

Sales tax

The combined rate in unincorporated Vermilion Parish is 8.75 percent:

Two things trip people up. Louisiana collects local sales tax locally, so registering with the state does not register you with the parish. And the rate follows where the work is done, not where your office is, so a Lafayette firm working on the ridge charges the Vermilion rate.

Vermilion Parish is split across seven taxing jurisdictions, and each one is listed on the Vermilion Parish guide and in the statewide rate tables.

Verify before you charge. Rates change and your exact address governs. Confirm with the Vermilion Parish sales tax office on 337-898-5732 before you set a rate in your invoicing.

Secretary of State fees

Under Act 921 of the 2026 Regular Session, Commercial Division fees increase on 1 October 2026.

An EIN from the IRS is free. Anything quoted well above these figures is a service fee, not a government fee. The order in which to file them is on the start a business page.

Licensing

There is no municipal occupational license, because there is no municipality. That is separate from the parish: Bizer's parish data records Vermilion as levying an occupational license outside its towns, so ask the Vermilion Parish sales tax office on 337-898-5732 whether it applies to your business before assuming you owe nothing. How the occupational license works, and what it costs, is explained in the statewide guide.

State level trade licensing applies here exactly as it does anywhere in Louisiana. Contractors, electricians, plumbers, food service, lodging and alcohol all have their own boards and requirements. The Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors licenses above the statutory thresholds, and the classification has to match the work. Unincorporated does not mean unregulated, and that misunderstanding is the most expensive one available out here.
