Qualify early so you stop chasing the wrong customers
You only have so many follow-up minutes in a day. Spending them on someone who was never going to buy is the most expensive mistake in sales. Qualifying is a quick, friendly check — do they have the need, the money, and the say-so? — so your time lands on the people who can actually become customers.
Do this
- Early on, ask three things: is this a real need right now, is there budget, and are they the one who decides?
- If it's a fit, move the deal to Qualified and set a strong next step.
- If it's not, be kind and clear — offer a smaller option or point them elsewhere. Don't let it sit in your pipeline pretending.
- Protect your best hours for qualified deals, not tire-kickers.
Three questions that qualify a lead
Ask these gently, woven into normal conversation:
NEED "What's got you looking into this now?" (A real trigger — a breakdown, a deadline — means it's live.)
BUDGET "Do you have a rough number in mind for this?" (You're not being rude. You're saving you both time.)
DECISION "Is it just you on the decision, or someone else too?" (So you're talking to the person who can actually say yes.)
Fit on all three → move to Qualified. Missing one → keep it light, don't chase.
