The Exit Phase: Make It Run Without You
Chapter 4 of Start to Exit: The Bizer Blueprint.
Exit does not mean selling. It means building a business that could run, and could sell, without you. This is the phase where the owner stops being the single point of failure, and it is the rarest and most credible band of all, because its steps are witnessed rather than merely claimed. Clear Exit across all four pillars and your Bizer Score reaches 500.
Money: Financial Transferability
Make the books trustworthy to a stranger. Keep clean three-statement financials and three or more years of records, prepare a due-diligence document set, and get a real valuation. The test is simple: could a buyer's accountant open your numbers and believe them without you in the room?
Customers: Customer Asset
The relationships have to belong to the business, not to you personally. Maintain a strong customer database, keep acquisition running durably, and put brand assets and accounts in the business's name. A customer base that leaves when you do is not an asset a buyer can count, so understanding customer worth matters most here.
Work: Scalable Operations
Prove the work happens without you. Keep a complete library of procedures and show jobs delivered by staff while you are not there. When a root-cause analysis of a problem ends with a fixed process instead of you personally stepping in, the operation has become transferable.
Management: Transferable Leadership
Build a team that runs the place. Develop leaders who own the major areas, put decision authority in writing, and pass the owner-absence test: a documented stretch where the business ran without the founder. A living, delegated plan, not a binder on a shelf, is what makes this real, which is why a dynamic business plan belongs at the center of it.
The whole point
A 500 is not paperwork. It is a business that keeps its value when you step away, whether you sell it, step back, or simply take a real vacation. That is the end of the climb the Blueprint maps, from your first dollar to a business that no longer needs you.
