Get certified the right way (free or cheap)

Getting certified is mostly paperwork proving you own and run the business — not a test you can fail. The key is to go through the official certifying bodies, which are free (federal) or modest-cost (corporate), and to steer clear of the 'certification mills' that charge big fees for credentials nobody recognizes. Get free help gathering the documents and it's very doable.

Do this

1. Go to the source: SBA (certify.sba.gov) for federal, WBENC/NMSDC/NGLCC/Disability:IN for corporate, your state/city for local.
2. Gather the proof: ownership documents, tax returns, licenses, and evidence you control day-to-day decisions.
3. Apply — federal certifications are free; corporate ones charge a modest processing fee, not thousands.
4. Get free help: an APEX Accelerator, SBDC, or Women's Business Center will walk you through the paperwork at no cost.
