Find the one thing that makes you different

If a customer can't tell why they'd pick you over the shop down the street, you're left competing on price — a race you don't want to win. A brand needs one clear thing you stand for and do better: faster, friendlier, more reliable, a real specialty. You don't have to be everything to everyone; you have to be known for one thing.

Do this

  1. List what a customer could choose instead of you — competitors, the big chain, or doing nothing.
  2. Find the one thing you do better or differently — and that customers actually care about.
  3. Say it plainly and own it: "the one who always shows up on time" / "the specialist in ___."
  4. Point everything — your pitch, your posts, your service — back at that one thing.

What are you the "most ___" option?

Fill in the blank. You want to be the obvious choice for one kind of customer:

"I'm the [most ___________] [what you do] for [who]."

Examples: • "the most reliable mobile mechanic for people who can't take off work" • "the friendliest lawn service on the west side" • "the go-to for old-house electrical nobody else wants to touch"

If you try to be the cheapest AND fastest AND best for everyone, you're nothing in particular. Pick the lane customers care about, and own it. Being known for one thing beats being forgettable at everything.
