Launch a Customer Referral Campaign
Referrals · Referral acquisition · About an hour to set up · 4 weeks · By Bizer
Most small businesses grow by word of mouth, but leave it to chance. This campaign gives happy customers a simple, clear way to refer someone, and gives you a way to see it working.
The objective
Turn satisfied customers into a steady source of new ones through a simple, clear referral offer.
When this campaign fits
You have satisfied customers and something you can offer, or simply ask, for a referral.
What you will need
- What you offer for a referral, if anything, and any terms
- How customers should send someone to you: a link, a code or your name
What Bizer prepares
- Plain referral instructions
- A message customers can forward to a friend
- A message inviting your customers to refer
- A simple tracking sheet
What you do
- Approve any incentive and its terms
- Share the campaign with your customers
What you get
A referral promotion kit and a tracking sheet.
Step by step
- Step 1: You decide on the referral offer, if any, and its terms.
- Step 2: Bizer drafts the instructions, the shareable message and the invitation.
- Step 3: Bizer prepares a tracking sheet for referrals received.
- Step 4: You approve the terms and send the invitation to happy customers.
- Step 5: Log each referral as it arrives, and thank the person who sent it.
How you will know it worked
Work completed
- Invitations sent: To satisfied customers
Campaign response
- Referrals received: Logged on the tracking sheet
Business outcome
- Referred people who became customers: Within the campaign
A finished campaign is not a guaranteed result. Each measure is tracked on its own.
What it needs connected
- Email or text (to invite customers)
- Customer list (optional, to choose who to ask)
Make it simple
A referral program fails when customers have to remember rules. One sentence should explain it: "Send a friend our way and you both get 10% off your next visit." If you cannot say it in one sentence, simplify it.
An incentive is optional
Many customers refer gladly when asked, with nothing in return. A small thank-you can help: a discount, a free add-on, or a donation to a local cause. Make sure the reward still makes sense for your margins, and write down the terms: who qualifies, when the reward is given, and when the offer ends. Some industries have rules about referral rewards; check yours before offering one.
Ask at the right moment
The best time to ask is right after a customer tells you they are happy: a thank-you message, a great review, a finished job. Ask the customers who already send people your way first.
Give them the words
Customers refer more when you hand them a message to forward. Bizer drafts one that sounds like a person, not an ad.
Track it
A simple sheet is enough: who referred, who was referred, the date, and whether they became a customer. Without tracking, you cannot thank the right person or know whether the program is working. Thank every referrer, reward or not.
