What Pecan Island is going to need
A workforce of thousands is coming to a place with almost no commercial base, 40 miles from the nearest town of any size. Almost every ordinary service is missing. This is a reasoned read of the gaps, not a procurement list.

The gap is the opportunity. Pecan Island today has hunting camps, a highway and a few hundred residents. From 2027 it is scheduled to host one of the largest construction projects in the state's history: Starbase Louisiana, with 3,000 direct jobs and an estimated 8,100 indirect roles.
The gaps
Worker housing and lodging
SpaceX has said the campus will include residential housing, but construction crews arrive years before permanent housing exists. Camps, RV pads, short term rentals and workforce lodging are the most obvious near term gap, and the existing hunting camp stock is both limited and seasonal.
Food service at scale
Catering, mobile kitchens, and somewhere that sells breakfast at five in the morning. There is effectively nothing on the ridge today, and a crew of any size has to eat three times a day.
Fuel, transport and logistics
Crew transport, equipment haulage, fuel delivery and freight staging. One highway in and out turns logistics into a specialism rather than an afterthought.
Earthwork and marine construction
Marsh, canals and soft ground. Firms with coastal and marine experience are far better placed here than general dirt contractors, and that experience is genuinely scarce.
Equipment hire and repair
Heavy plant, welding gear, generators and compressors, plus mechanics who can keep them running a long way from a dealership. Downtime is expensive when the nearest parts counter is 40 miles away.
Safety and compliance
Site safety, environmental monitoring, surveying and inspection. A project under this much environmental scrutiny will be heavily specified and heavily documented.
Staffing and training
Welders, technicians and equipment operators at volume. LED FastStart covers recruitment and training for the employer, which leaves the pipeline feeding into it wide open for staffing firms and trade schools.
Everyday services
Laundry, waste and portable sanitation, vehicle repair, medical response, and eventually childcare and retail for a workforce that will live nearby rather than commute.
The timing trap
This is the part that decides whether any of the above makes money.
- Too early and you carry cost for two years. Construction is slated for 2027. Committing to a lease, a building or a fleet in 2026 means funding it through a period with no revenue attached to this project at all.
- Too late and the lists are closed. Vendor qualification happens well before mobilisation. By the time trucks are visibly moving, the suppliers have generally been chosen.
The reasonable middle is to get qualified now, which costs little, and to hold capital commitments until there is a contract or a credible letter of intent behind them. What qualifying involves is on the contracting page, and the estimated development timeline sets out which trades are likely to be bought in which phase.
Construction demand is not operating demand
These are two different businesses. The construction phase is large, temporary and heavy on trades, equipment, logistics and feeding people. The operating phase is smaller, permanent and weighted towards technical services, maintenance and the ordinary needs of a resident community.
A business built entirely around construction should know when its market ends. A business built for the operating phase should not expect volume in 2027.
How to check any of this for yourself
- Call the Vermilion Economic Development Alliance on 337-740-0433 and ask what supplier interest they are already fielding.
- Watch who wins the early packages. The primes appointed for earthwork and civil works will define the subcontract demand for years.
- Look at Starbase in Texas. The nearest available analogue for what grows around a site like this and in what order.
- Talk to people already on the ridge. Camp owners and local contractors will see the change before any announcement does.
